Kind Words

I get a lot of testimonials and thank you letters from couples, some of which can be seen on the testimonials section of my website www.captiv8.uk.com but I received a lovely email last night from Lucie & Chris who were married last year in Peebles. They live in Holland, and were married at St Peters Church in Peebles, with the reception at Neidpath Castle. Here’s the link to the original blog post : Lucie & Chris

Anyway, their beautiful album was delivered to Chris’s family and they have only just received it, and sent me a beautiful email last night which I felt I had to share. It’s too big for the testimonial page so deserves a blog post of it’s own! It’s things like this that make this job so special and often bring a tear to my eye. It really is a great privilege to play such a big part in the happiest day of someone’s life, and I think sometimes people get too bogged down in the business side of things and forget this. The emotions and feelings on a wedding day are the main reason I am a wedding photographer and not concentrating on other types of photography. I still get the same buzz from seeing the day unfold as I did when I started, well over 300 weddings ago. It is a great honour therefore to be chosen to capture all these moments, and I am very grateful to everyone who puts time and thought into choosing me to do this. Anyway, enough waffling, here’s the words from Lucie and Chris.

Dear John,

So, finally, I managed to get back to the UK and pick up the wedding album this weekend. Even then a volcano nearly scuppered the trip!

It was such a thrill to open the box and see the album for the first time – I love the aluminium look, it’s different and has a real wow factor. And the images themselves are fantastic. You made us both look like superstars – some of the images look like they’ve come straight from the pages of a fashion magazine.

It’s hard to pick favourites, since there are so many wonderful memories within each picture. I think we both agree though that the shot of us dancing together in the wooden room is absolutely amazing. I also think some of the shots you got of Lucie in the castle are simply stunning….I could look at them for hours.

Two other things strike me about your work. One is that you have captured all the classic wedding poses – bride arriving at church, bride and groom coming down the aisle, cake cutting etc. – but somehow put a movement and an emotion into them which gets away from cliché, which is no mean feat. The second is that wherever I turn a page, I see genuine smiles and laughter, which is how I remember the day. You truly captured the most precious day in our lives in a way that will refresh our memories forever. Thank you so much.

With sincere regards,

Chris Goater

Hi John,

At last Chris was able to get the wedding album from his parents and I’m actually really glad it we had to wait, as the pleasure of having so many wonderful memories vividly awakened was even more intense because of the time lapse.

You have captured my darling Chris perfectly in his full handsome splendour and I was just saying to him last night that the album will probably be on the Antiques Road Show in 200 years time as a work of art (well, I was getting a bit carried away which I can blame on the hormones but you never know!)

I loved your judgement in knowing exactly when something will best express the moment in colour, black and white or sepia shades and in the way you put together the whole wedding as a story with very clear chapters in different styles.  I’m so glad we had you as our photographer.  So many wedding albums can be a bit on the twee side, but you managed to make the whole thing look very cool and super stylish with not a cliché in sight.

We will be in touch very soon to order more prints so that we can enjoy them every day and give them to our friends and family.

With warmest wishes,

Lucie Goater

O’Neill Coldwater Classic, Final

A few images from the final of the surfing today at Thurso East. South African Royden Bryson (Red) beat Brazilian Yuri Sodre (white) in a frustrating final, which had to be restarted due to lack of waves. It picked up slightly but didn’t live up to the usual Thurso East standards.

O’Neill Coldwater Classic Surfing, Thurso, Scotland

Once again the O’Neill surfing event is being held at Thurso and surfers from all over the world have experienced 4 seasons over the weekend, today being affected by snow showers! I’ve managed a couple of short visits to the contest on Wednesday and today, and once again feeling jealous of many of the amazing lenses on display amongst some of the other photographers. This is just a very small selection of images from the event.

Some images from todays match. Wick Academy 0 Cove Rangers 2

A quite even match but Kevin Webster’s two stunning free kicks separated the teams.

Pre Wedding Shoot at Ruthven Barracks

My second shoot of the day yesterday was at Ruthven Barracks near Kingussie. It’s a stunning location which was built in the 18th century and always catches the eye on it’s fantastic hilltop setting when you travel along the A9 from Inverness to Perth. The couple were Diane Knox and Craig Campbell from Inverness, who are getting married at the end of June this year.  It was a beautiful evening, although a bit windy up there, which was causing problems with hair (more for Diane than Craig), but we got some really nice images and had a great laugh along the way. I really enjoy pre wedding shoots as there isn’t the same pressure, and you can have more fun. Hopefully this comes through in the final images. After we left we were driving over an old bridge and the light was great so I hit the brakes and flagged them down for one last 2 minute shoot, which I am glad we did now. A great ending to a really great day in the sunshine!

Pre Wedding Photography at Dingwall

Yesterday I met up with Jody Freer and Muir Morton in Dingwall for a pre wedding shoot. It was the most amazing day for early April. Beautiful sunshine, and very hot. We went to the Ferry area first where sunglasses were a necessity, but got some cool images there, before driving up into the hills to get some shots with Ben Wyvis in the background, which still is covered in snow. I think we all had a great time and some of the images are here to see.

Pre wedding shoots are included in most of my packages, and are very popular. They are a great opportunity for a couple to have a ‘practice’ session in front of the camera, and get used to working with me. I like to keep them quite natural, and fun, in the same style I shoot on the wedding day. It’s a chance to get to know each other and is a great way for me to show anyone who is ‘camera shy’ just how easy it can be when you have chosen the right photographer. It is also an opportunity to get some nice natural portrait images, which can be used in a number of ways on the actual wedding days. A large mounted print for guests to sign is just one of a number of products which have proved popular in recent times.

Premier Wedding Planners Scotland

Very pleased to introduce the first of a series of guest spots on my blog.

Hello fellow Captiv8 fans!

As Wedding Planners , we are always looking for fellow businesses of the highest standard, and I am delighted to say that we regularly work with John. He has allowed me to take over one of his blog posts to allow me to introduce our business to you.

Premier Wedding Planners Scotland are of a very similar mindset to Captiv8 Photography – passionate, innovative, hard-working and dedicated, with an attention to detail that is second to none, and an eye for all things beautiful.

I’m sure some of you are thinking ‘wedding planners, no way, I can’t afford one of those/don’t need one of those’. However, having a wedding planner to help coordinate your day can prove to be an invaluable resource.

Firstly, the scope of choice for your wedding can be insurmountable & overwhelming. When to hold it? Where to hold it? What type of wedding? Who to invite? What to wear? What will suit me? Catering? Cake? Music? Entertainment? Flowers? Vows? Legal paperwork? Hen/Stag parties? Favours/gifts for wedding party? Honeymoon? etc etc. Even if you have an idea in your head of what you want, do you know if it is achievable? It is viewed by many Brides – if not most – as the most important day of their lives. Do you know if you can trust the suppliers you’ve hired? Are their prices fair? Have you got the time to organise all this on top of your day to day going-ons? No one has enough time in the day as it is, without the stress of trying to organise a wedding. The pressure from society to have a ‘perfect’ wedding is incredible.

Here at Premier Wedding Planners Scotland, we can take away that pressure and stress so you can enjoy the run up to your big day. We offer a bespoke service, not a set package. This way we can tailor it specifically to your needs and wants, to ensure that we help you to achieve the dream day that you have envisaged. We charge based on the amount of coordination required, therefore can work on an ad-hoc basis if this is more suitable. We work very closely with you, via meetings, emails, telephone & Skype. We also have a private client login on our website that you can use to communicate with us, as well a base from which you can check the progress of our coordination. We have two offices, one in Inverness that covers the north of Scotland, and one in Edinburgh, covering central and southern Scotland. This ensures that we are always on-hand, close to suppliers and your venue, should we need to see them at short notice. We have built up a strong network of reliable suppliers, that can be trusted alongside us to deliver your vision.

Our clients often say to us that they weren’t sure at first if they could afford a wedding planner, if it was an additional unnecessary expense on top of an already expensive event – but after the wedding they always tell us that we were an invaluable resource.  They regard our coordination fee as nominal as Premier Wedding Planners Scotland is in the best position to negotiate discounts on your behalf. Our fee is consequently recouped and more often reimbursed through the strong discounts that we can obtain.

Amelia & Bobby, Dunrobin Castle

Amelia and Bobby are from Hong Kong, and got married over there in January. They wanted to come to the UK, and decided to have some photography done at a Scottish castle. As they had family in Tain, they checked out some places in the Highlands and the fairytale venue of Dunrobin Castle was chosen as the venue, and Captiv8 was chosen to do the photography. The only thing the couple had no say in was the weather, and blizzard conditions hit the country on Tuesday, and by Wednesday, although the snow had subsided slightly, it was very windy and sleet showers meant that we’d have to shoot indoors. The good thing being that Dunrobin is such a special place, there’s no problem finding indoor locations either. I’m sure Amelia was imagining images such as those I shot last year of Natalie there for Photo pro, but sadly it was not to be. Full marks to them both for being brave enough to step outside for 5 minutes so we could get something to show that they actually were there! Thanks to Scott Morrison, the manager who was very helpful and kindly drove us down to a sheltered area of the garden.

St Anne’s Church, Thurso. 50th Anniversary Mass

Last week I was invited along to the 50th Anniversary mass at local catholic church, St Anne’s. Archbishop Mario Conti was present. He was a former priest at the church. Here are a few images from the evening.

E Shoot

Last weekend I went to the stunning Rogie Falls to do a pre wedding shoot with Julie and Tommy who get married in July. It had been wet so the rocks were a bit tricky, and my leg isn’t fully back to normal yet so I couldn’t get to the spots I normally would, but we had fun anyway.

I’ve still to finish editing this set, but here are a few for now.
