Composition & Thinking Differently

One thing I have done recently, is go back to what I used to do years ago, and think beyond the standard SLR 3:2 ratio, and think panoramic, square, 5:4, and so on. I have now fallen in love with the square format all over again. I used to crop square a lot in my early days of portraits and weddings, but I have found it a refreshing change shooting landscape photography as a square image.

I’ve always felt I was quite good at finding compositions, but I have been struggling in recent weeks. I have a feeling I may be overthinking things sometimes, and trying to cram too much in. Anyway, I was out shooting sunsets and sunrises this week, and just seemed to waste a lot of time trying to find the right angle. Sometimes sunsets and sunrises are actually just not going to work, no matter what you do. By the way, no matter if you are a morning person, or more of a night owl, like me, do try to catch the occasional sunrise, as it truly is the best part of the day. It is magical watching everything come to life, generally all alone, with your thoughts, and the sounds, if any, of nature all around.

I can’t share much from what I am doing at the moment, as I have to save my best images for my book, which is almost ready to be laid out for printing, but here’s a square image from this morning which I really like. Using lines to lead the eye through the scene, and cropped square for impact. The original shape really didn’t work for me.

Sometimes being square isn’t such a bad thing.
