Lee Ann & Frannie wedding photography

At the beginning of the month I had the privilege of shooting the wedding of Lee Ann Cameron and Frannie MacPhee at Tain. The couple live in Hertford, but Lee Ann is from Tain and Frannie is from the Western Isles. The wedding was at Lee Ann’s family home, Aspen, where they run Aspen Spa

The wedding was in two parts, with a service in St Mary’s church Inverness on the Thursday, before the main event at Aspen on Saturday, which was a humanist ceremony conducted by Kate Buchanan. Lee Ann got ready at a cottage on Balnagown Estate, where I managed to get lost 3 times after I left them to head to the venue! It was a fantastic wedding, which I really enjoyed. Everyone was so much fun and made me feel part of the family (the poor folk  didn’t know any better) and it was definitely another “I love my job” occasion! Saturday was a beautiful (too sunny hehe) but slightly cold day. We managed to get a half hour shoot in Glenmorangie distillery after the wedding which was awesome fun! Thanks to Robert Nicholson who came in on his day off to let us in as well. That was a great gesture.

Over to Lee Ann for the next bit:

What advice would you give to other brides planning their wedding?” Hire a wedding planner – Lucy from Premier Wedding Planners in Inverness was worth her weight in gold! Especially if you are having a marquee.”

Was there anything you’d have done differently? “Had the ceremony earlier – it all goes by in a whirlwind!”

Any other stories or comments?” Its all about the shoes! Invest in a special pair that you can wear again…”

Choosing a Wedding Photographer

Choosing the right wedding photographer is a vital decision. One of the most important decisions in the entire wedding planning process.

I find it really concerning that there are so many total beginners advertising as ‘wedding photographers’ these days.  It seems that any new DSLR now comes with a free business name and website, as so many who don’t even have the most basic skills are now trying to get wedding work as they see a way to make easy money.

So what should you look for in a photographer?

Choose a qualified photographer with one of the main photography societies. MPA, SWPP or BIPP are the big ones. Qualifications are Licentiate, Associate or Fellow and these photographers will have the letters after their name e.g. FMPA, FSWPP, FBIPP etc. This means they have submitted work to a highly qualified panel of judges for assessment.

Style. Choose on style and not price. See if the photographer has samples of complete weddings as it’s easy to show one good picture from six different weddings on a website, but that does not make a good photographer. There must be consistency throughout the day, in different locations and under pressure, and with different lighting conditions. Also if you are looking at sample albums, forget the covers and look at the photographs. Too many people are wowed by a fancy cover and anybody can buy a good album and put pictures in it. What is inside is what matters. Look for imagination, flattering lighting and posing.

How many weddings have they done? Experience is almost as vital as photography skills when shooting a wedding. If you’ve chosen one with experience they will help you through the day and take the stress away, and be able to deal with any unforseen circumstances, including changes in weather, equipment problems, or whatever.

Does your photographer have the correct insurance if anything goes wrong? Do they have spare equipment to cover any eventuality?

Personality. Do you get on with them? Meet up and see if you feel relaxed and comfortable with the photographer as they need to be able to put you at ease on the day so you look your best.

Beware of ‘awards’. A bronze, silver or gold in the SWPP monthly competition is not an award. I’ve seen websites where photographers have claimed to win awards, when in actual fact they have got a bronze or a silver in this competition, which in actual fact means their image has not been successful. Gold images are finalists, but again not actual awards. So if a photographer says he/she is award winning, ask what they have won.

I have honestly lost count of the number of people I have spoken to over the last 10 years who have said things like “if there was one regret from my wedding it was that I never spent a little more on the right photographer”. I get a lot of brides coming to me that have had friends or family made that mistake, and they are very keen not to let that happen again. There is no point having all the other beautiful things at your wedding if you do not have the photographs for memories in years to come.

These beginners are using your wedding day to practice and learn the craft, and do not care if they ruin it as they usually have another job to fall back on. They do it as they think it’s easy money. There is no substitute for a full time qualified and experienced photographer.

I have been photographing weddings for 12 years now and can’t remember how many I have done, but well over 300. I think any bride I have photographed in recent years will back up the claim that my experience has been a big help on the day.

I am now offering pre wedding shoots to ALL couples, even if you have not booked yet. Ask for further details! 08000 699169 or john@captiv8.uk.com

Lorna & Greg Pre wedding shoot

I recently went to Nairn beach with Lorna Fraser and Greg Wooler, for a pre wedding/engagement shoot, prior to their wedding in July at Barn Church in Inverness. It was a very cold evening so it was a quick shoot, with jackets being thrown off for a few seconds for each shot, then back on again till we went to another spot. Looking forward to the big day folks!

Pre wedding shoots are included in most of my packages, and are very popular. They are a great opportunity for a couple to have a ‘practice’ session in front of the camera, and get used to working with me. I like to keep them quite natural, and fun, in the same style I shoot on the wedding day. It’s a chance to get to know each other and is a great way for me to show anyone who is ‘camera shy’ just how easy it can be when you have chosen the right photographer. It is also an opportunity to get some nice natural portrait images, which can be used in a number of ways on the actual wedding days. A large mounted print for guests to sign is just one of a number of products which have proved popular in recent times.

A chance to show one of my favourite images of 2010 featuring model Natalie Oag

I really like this image, which was shot in a derelict building. Lit with my QFlash and Pocket Wizards and shot on the Canon 5D MK2.

Castle of Mey 10k Race

I was the official photographer again at the annual Castle of Mey 10k race, which was held on Sunday 16th May. A beautiful day and a big turnout meant yet another successful event. 302 runners this year as well as a childrens fun run. I’d have had the pictures online last night if some idiot hadn’t locked me out of my office over the weekend so apologies for the delay! Here are a few of the main winners and featured runners. The full set is available here: CASTLE OF MEY PICS

General Election 2010

I attended the count for the general election at Wick Assembly Rooms last night. I have attended several of these now and really enjoy it. Results for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross as follows:

John Mackay – Scottish Labour Party – 7081
Jean Urquhart – Scottish National Party – 5516
Alastair Graham – Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party – 3744
Gordon Campbell – Independent – 520
Voter Turnout 61%

Alladale Lodge Wedding Photography

A couple of weeks ago I made a return to Alladale Wilderness Lodge, one of the most amazing places in the country. Check out their website and see the amazing things that are going on there!

Kat Young and Andy Lancaster chose this remote location for their wedding, which was a very cool occasion, and just a little bit different to the usual traditional weddings!

Sadly the weather turned a bit nasty and it was a bit wet and windy, and as they were getting married right in the middle of the glen, the wedding party were very exposed to the elements. It was good fun though, and despite the weather everyone had a great time. I did manage to persuade the happy couple to come back out to the spot where they married before I left and we got a few minutes on the decking to get some cool pictures, just before everyone turned blue!

Claire & Jason, Farr Beach wedding

Last week I had a really fun wedding to cover on Farr Beach, Bettyhill. Claire Laidlaw and Jason Ritchie travelled up to North West Sutherland to get married at this picturesque location after falling for it last year. The couple are in the middle of a long term travelling adventure which you can read about on their website moglet.co.uk They had a humanist ceremony, conducted by Kate, the local celebrant. There were just 6 of us on the beach, the happy couple, two witnesses, Kate and myself, so it was a lovely tranquil scene, and a pleasure to be part of it.

As usual I had a rant about the weather. Despite it snowing the day before, and sleet showers in the morning, once the afternoon came around the sun came out and it was a lovely day, although it was….TOO sunny!

Wedding at Crieff Hydro

Sheila Peters and Allan Common from Glenmoriston were married at Crieff Hydro last month, and I was lucky enough to photograph their big day. I arrived on the Friday to shoot a Ceilidh they had put on. The couple play in a Ceilidh band, so this would be a big part of the weekend, with Sheilas dress being made in tartan, with musical notes included in the design. It was a fantastic weekend, with lots of fun and laughter, especially in the company of the barmy bridesmaids (and the sensible one). The wedding was shot about 90% in PJ style, with less posed shots than I normally do, so it was a slightly different challenge, but very enjoyable.

I had a bit of a late night adventure on the Saturday, when my hotel room managed to lock me out and nobody could get in until eventually a porter broke in with specialised equipment (crowbar and big hammer).

Here’s a few images from the day.
