Early Bird And All That

So, for the last few weeks, I have been doing a daily ‘Dad’s Taxi Service’ back and forth to Raigmore hospital where Cerys is on placement from University. This has been good at getting me and about nice and early and I decided to take advantage of the early morning, and the lovely winter light, combined with my favourite – snow. Well to be honest it is slowly becoming less of a favourite as it has dragged on for too long, and my fitness and lack of time cycling the roads, is suffering, despite my best efforts.

So Monday morning I decided to head up to Loch Ashie to do a couple of early morning images. I had done a fashion shoot there last week, so it was in my mind that there was potential for a long exposure shot featuring the jetty. To be perfectly honest, I couldn’t really get the angle I wanted, and after my ice incident a few weeks ago, I decided not to be too much of a daredevil this time. Link here if you missed that adventure: ICE INCIDENT

The light was lovely, despite me being the wrong side of the loch for the sunrise, it was still effective. My car – I mentioned before – is utterly shit in snow, so I did have a few ‘moments’ where I thought I may need help – yes, I know I need help daily – but I mean physical help to move the car, rather than psychological help.

Anyway, I loved the unusual shapes of pieces of broken ice at the edge of the water, so featured them as part of my foreground (for the sake of everyone who attended my recent workshops, you’ll know the importance of this).

These images were both 30 second exposures at f10, ISO 400.

I was very happy with how they turned out. Show on the Canon 5D mk3, and 16-35mm lens, at the 16mm end.
