Highland Whisky Festival – Old Pulteney

Last week saw the very first Highland Whisky Festival take place, and I was lucky enough to be invited to the Old Pulteney Distillery in Wick for their day. The festival featured events at Wolfburn, Old Pulteney, Clynelish, Balblair, Glenmorangie, Dalmore, Glen Ord and Tomatin distilleries.

All set up for guests to arrive

The Old Pulteney event was fantastic, and I cannot speak highly enough of the experience everyone received, with manager Malcolm and his staff making sure everyone went away raving about the great experience they had. There’s no doubt this festival will now grow and become hugely successful.

Malcolm prepares for his masterclass

The amazing whiskies included in the masterclass session had my mouth watering, and the attendees certainly got more than value for money. Some spectacular drams in there – did I have a taste of any? Obviously for research purposes I had to. One particularly rare dram was probably the finest drink I have ever tasted (or smelled).

Some of the line up for the day.

Tasting session
This chap travelled all the way from Southern Wales to enjoy the event. Dedication indeed!

The afternoon saw Malcolm team up with chef Jak O’Donnell, a regular on tv, to introduce some pairings of food and drink. Interesting seeing how they work together, and can confirm that the food was every bit as nice as the whisky. The venison dish in particular, was amazing.
