When You Think You Have Time

I was clearing out some posts in my drafts folder here earlier and found this. I started writing this blog over a year ago. It ended up becoming my first book, The Magic Of The North Coast 500. Interesting looking back at where my head was at that time, and how that changed my thought process, and developed into a life changing experience.

Life. It’s a strange thing really. We are only certain of one thing once we are here, and that is that one day we will die. We just don’t know when.

I have to confess to being one of those people who always think I want to do this and that, but put things off, thinking there’s plenty time next year or the year after, or whatever. Now I don’t know if it is my age or what, but recently I suddenly, and it was sudden, not some sort of gradual thing, realised that I was getting older and thought “how long do I actually have to do these things?”. Even allowing for longevity, and good health, how long will I be physically able to do certain things I want to achieve. Then you start to realise – we don’t have time at all.

I have seen people my age and younger die since I was old enough to understand death. From single figure ages up till now, there’s regularly a wake up call, but why do we just take it for granted that we will always be here?

I have just realised that I actually need to start making shit happen if I want to fulfill my goals. I also have to confess to having started thinking about what sort of ‘legacy’ – if that is the correct word – I will leave behind me from a photography point of view. This has made me start to look out my best images and start shooting new content which is worth keeping.

Deep, but clearly a strong message in there, and something we all need to consider from time to time. You don’t have time. Well, you may have, who knows. My book was a case of  ‘I really want there to be something there if I drop dead tomorrow’. Something to be remembered for. Small, insignificant, maybe, but something. Now I plan to add to this with other projects, and I am currently working on about 2500 of them…..

So my message is – do stuff now. Travel. Buy the shoes. Write the book. Take the course. Whatever it is you are thinking “oh I will do that next year”, start today. Not January the 1st. Not Monday. Today.

One decision could be life changing for you. What have you got to lose?
