Wedding Photography at Tongue Hotel and Durness

Yesterday I had an amazing day with Annkatrin and Daniel, who came all the way from Germany to get married in our beautiful country.

Their base was the awesome Tongue Hotel, a beautiful venue, based right on one of the most picturesque parts of the North Coast 500, with stunning views all around.

Stunning views across the Kyle of Tongue from the hotel, and there is Castle Varrich on the left. See my YouTube video from there.

The wedding was to take place on the spectacular Ceannabeinne Beach, near Durness. Bit of a mouthful, but if you want to know how to pronounce it, think of ‘can of beans’ and you are pretty close. Also a mouthful… Thanks to David at the Hotel for the help with that one. If you have been on the North Coast 500, or even just that area, it is the beach with the zip wire across it, run by Golden Eagle Zip Line.

This was where Daniel proposed to Annkatrin, hence the choice of this for their big day. A special place in their hearts!

And….guess who went on the zip slide before we returned to Tongue? Yes, our cool bride and groom. The first bride and groom to actually do this zip slide, which was pretty awesome. It was beautiful weather, but very cold, so fair play to them. (I did get Daniel to confirm he wasn’t going commando under his kilt before this event took place).

If you are coming all the way from Germany, why not choose the most spectacular location!

AnnKatrin’s sister Theresa was creative with the couple’s shoes, so it was important to capture this one!
Beach, shoes, romance and shadows. Trying to combine everything in one shot!
What a day!

I wanted to get a bit higher to capture more of the feel of the location. Being at sea level takes much of the magic away from this spot as you lose the colours and shapes. Thanks to my glamorous assistant Simon (one of the guests) who helped me shift lighting around and took this shot of me lining everything up.

I felt I needed to get up higher to capture more of the beach
It was definitely worth climbing up for this perspective.
And here they are after zip wiring across the spot where they were married an hour earlier.

It was a fantastic, relaxed day, and everyone had a great time. Including me, who was lying in wet sand, climbing dangerous rock faces, and bouncing around like a madman trying to get the right images. If the difference between a decent shot and a great shot is wet feet, or dirty clothes, well, so what? Always worth the effort.

Thanks to Lorraine and David at the hotel for looking after me so well as always, and thanks to this awesome couple for being so much fun – and the rest of the group.
