Rock The Frock Shoot – Gemma

My first ‘Rock The Frock’ shoot of the year was with my first bride of the year, Gemma Wainwright (formerly Hamilton). Rock The Frock shoots, sometimes badly named as Trash The Dress, are a post wedding shoot, which allows the bride to get THAT  dress back on rather than store it in the loft forever more. I have changed the name from Trash The Dress to Rock The Frock as many people think the dress will get damaged or wrecked, which is never the case, unless you want that…..  It is a fashion shoot in a wedding dress, but with less restrictions than on the wedding day and brides tend to be less ‘fussy’ about getting wet or dirty or going places they may not consider on the day. It isn’t just for newly married brides either, sometimes people have been married for a few years and just fancy trying it on again and having fun. You don’t have to have had me for your wedding photography either, in fact often it is people who for one reason or another, never had me there that book these. If you want more info look at the wedding gallery section on the website or email me at enquiries@captiv8.uk.com or call 0800 0699169 to book! Limited dates available in the year for these so book quick.

On to Gemma’s shoot, which was at a secret location…near Inverness. We had a great time. It was a crazy day because when the sun was out it was roasting and then every now and again we got a slight shower of hailstones. Only in Scotland! We shot in several locations and we were both delighted with the images. It ended with Gemma in the river, but only ankle deep as it was very cold and fast flowing, which could be dangerous as I found out once before (ask me for that story).

A few images from our shoot.

Wedding Photography Dunrobin Castle – Nicola & Derek

Another wedding at one of my favourite locations in the entire country, Dunrobin Castle.  Nicola Kemp and Derek Manson, from Thurso, were married here at the end of April. Dunrobin is a great location for wedding photography, due to the locely gardens, the fairytale-like castle building, and with loads of amazing indoor locations with lots of light if the weather isn’t good. Well this day wasn’t the best for weather, as there was showers of snow before the wedding and apparently the wedding party drove through a load of snow on the way down from Thurso. As Nicola and her bridesmaids were getting ready at the castle, it saved a lot of travelling and meant we were just in one venue for the entire day. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. Susan Brown, who is the minister at Dornoch Cathedral, and she was her usual entertaining self, having everyone in stitches with her wit. After the ceremony despite the cold, it did brighten up briefly allowing us to get some outdoor images with the castle, but the gardens were definitely out of bounds for wedding dresses.

A fun day amongst a lot of old friends which made it very enjoyable.

A small selction from the day.

Engagement Photography Inverness – Fort George shoot

Donna Fleider and Andy Ross get married this summer, and chose Fort George for their pre wedding shoot. It was a cold day but we managed to get enough time in between rain showers to get some cool pictures around the Fort, before we headed off and did a few shots at a friends farm in the hay and I even found an old truck to use, so was in my element.

Hair Photography Inverness – Gallery Hair

I was asked to help Gallery Hair in Inverness with some new promotional images for their salon. The images were for an event they were exhibiting at, and we enlisted the help of Dress 2 Impress Bridal Shop in Inverness to provide dresses for the shoot. I then managed to arrange for access to Achnagairn House for the shoot, which gave us indoor and outdoor options, depending on the weather. The models for the day were Caroline  Carmichael, Chevonne Lee, Deborah MacQueen and LeighAnn Reid.

A few of the many images we took on the day

Pre Wedding Shoot Ardvreck Castle – Anna and Fraser

So it was second time lucky for this shoot, after the weather wrecked our plans the first time we planned it. Ardvreck Castle is a very cool ruined castle on the shore of Loch Assynt, up near Lochinver. Anna and Fraser were getting married later in the month so we were running out of dates for this shoot. The forecast was nice, but when I arrived up there it was absolutely baltic and there was a light shower of hailstones. This was not going to be a long shoot!

NNCMC – Music Photography

Last month saw me back at the Northern Nashville Country Music Festival, in Halkirk, Caithness. It is a huge and very popular event on the Country Music Circuit, and I have photographed it every year since it began, so was delighted to be invited back again by the committee. I love shooting live music events, so this is a great chance to get some cool images. There were bands from all over the world, including the USA, Netherlands, Ireland,England and of course Scotland, including some local Caithness acts.

The Societies Convention 2012

This is a video of me shooting on one of my classes at the SWPP/Societies Convention in London in January, shot by Rob Summers, of Promo Films

We were doing a piece about using locations, and this shows me setting up some images on the fire escape at the side of the hotel.

Scottish Master Photographers Awards 2012

I recently attended the Scottish Regional MPA annual awards event  at the Novotel Edinburgh Park

It was a great day, and lovely to meet up with so many friends in the industry. There was a seminar by well known businessman Gerald Ratner, which I found totally inspirational and also very entertaining. The awards attracted a huge number of entries and the standard was very high, as pointed out by the judges. I was absolutely thrilled to win the Contemporary Portrait category with this image below of Jade Hunt, who won Face of Glasgow and more recently Miss Galaxy Scotland:

I was also chuffed to get a Merit Award in Pets and Animals for this image of a Highland Bull.

Wedding Photographer Inverness – Emily and Malcolm

Second wedding of the year and another one at the very popular Loch Ness Country House Hotel.  Emily McNelis and Malcolm MacDonald were married at this great Inverness wedding venue. It was another beautiful spring day, with more complaints from me about the sunshine…but it was great to be able to work outside so easily in March. We started off with some shots of Emily and her lovely bridesmaids getting their make up done and getting ready, before heading to LNCHH for the shots of the guys arriving.  After the ceremony, we had some great fun shooting around the grounds of the hotel, before finishing off with some fun group pictures. It was yet another amazing day and a privilege to be part of it. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs MacDonald!

Wedding Photography Inverness – Gemma and Andy

So the first wedding of 2012 was last month, and after a nice break over the winter it was back to one of my favourite venues, Loch Ness Country House Hotel just outside Inverness. I love shooting weddings at this Inverness location as it has such great opportunities for pictures, either outisde or inside if the weather is not favourable. Luckily Gemma and Andy had an amazing day and the sun was shining all day right up until time to sit for dinner. We started at Gemma’s home for getting ready shots, before heading to LNCHH for the ceremony, which was a humanist one, and as always very nice to be aprt of as it is so personal to the couple. Jackie did a great job, and there were a few tears! There was a few special moments along the way which had myself and Gillian my assistant having a tear in our eyes, one being when the couple’s youngest son Cailean saw mum for the first time as she got out of the car, and when the very grown up Evan walked mum down the aisle then waited patiently for a kiss. All very special parts of the day which I am glad to have captured for them to cherish forever. Moments like that cannot be repeated! The shoot was a load of fun and I was pretty6 excited about the light and the shots we got. We then had a lovely meal as usual at LNCHH, before the band The Shire started up and the evening fun began! A really lovely and wonderful day to kickstart a new year and if every other wedding is as good as this one I will have a great year!
